Notes
General:
This is a history of the Adams family told from the perspective of John Quincy Adams, Charlotte Moore's son.
John Quincey Adams was born at Galax, Virginia on October 14, 1893 to David and Charlotte Moore Adams. He went to school at Old Town, Virginia. In 1901 his father was killed in a sawmill accident and later his mother married Robert Harbison from Texarkana, Texas. Mr. Harbison took John to Florida and they purchased a place at Aripeka, Florida. The rest of the family joined them after selling the farm in Virginia, this was in 1906, they later moved to Brooksville, Florida.
John's brother, Frank, died mysteriously in Florida in 1906 and his mother, Charlotte, died in 1907. There was suspicion that Mr. Harbison was responsible for both deaths. John was 14 at the time and he worked for awhile as a cook on a boat. That same year his older brother, Joe, came from Colorado and arranged for John and his brother, Glen, to meet him at the train station and the three started for Colorado only to be stopped in Dade County by the Sheriff who arrested Joe for kidnapping. The sheriff kept them in his own home that night and the next day returned them to Hernando County. The judge said Mr. Harbison had no case when Joe explained the situation of the mysterious deaths in the family, so they were released and continued on to Colorado where John and Glen resided with their sister, Cora, and her husband, Will Hawkins and family at Delta, Colorado for two years working on a farming operation of neighbors of the Hawkins family.
Glen, who had not been well since birth, died in 1908 and John went to Telluride, Colorado and worked on a dairy for a time. In 1909 he went to Battle Creek, Nebraska and stayed with an uncle, Randall Collins, and went to a country school.
