Notes
General:
For Dorcas, Dan Gundy was a tragic and gallant figure of her imagination. She always imagined that he went to Colorado and found peace and perhaps even fortune. As I have searched the history of Dan Gundy, a sadder more tragic story appears. He wasn't gallant. I see him as a displaced soldier of the Civil War - a young man, thirty years old, involved in a miserable drunken fight in which he killed a man and probably took this man's money. - Comments by Helen R. This is the story that was told to Dorcas by her mother concerning Dan Gundy
Dan Gundy was a soldier in the civil war. After the war he went to St Paul. One night as he was walking down a street in St. Paul, he heard a woman scream. He ran into the an alley to help the woman only to discover that it had been a put-up job. In the scuffle he killed a man. Dan Gundy spent five years in prison convicted of second degree murder. When he was released from prison he he went to his sister Frances Gundy. He told her that his life was ruined and that he was going to go west to Colorado to begin a new life.
